Who is Phil Harris?

The Phil Harris-Alice Faye Show was the show that made Phil Harris a household name in old time radio.

Phil Harris grew up in Nashville, TN and was born in Indiana. Growing up, Phil Harris got into drumming from quite a young age, and took this further in the 1930s when Phil Harris started up his very own band.

Phil Harris’ career also spanned the film industry. In 1933, Phil Harris made a filmed called So This is Phil Harris for RKO. Phil Harris film went on to win the Oscar for best live action short subject.

Phil Harris as a Musical Director

In 1936, just a couple of years later, the Jack Benny Show received a new musical director, Phil Harris. The band had him as their lead and he also sang. Furthermore, Phil Harris also starred as a comical Southerner in a speaking role on the show. During this stint, Phil Harris gained a following for his musical and comedic talents. It wasn’t long before he recorded musical numbers too, using a varied mix of musical styles to help his music get noticed and stand out from the crowd.

In 1941 he married Alice Faye, who he remained married to for 54 years. Even though this was not their first marriage, this second marriage with each other was the perfect one. Fitch Bandwagon eventually invited the couple to perform.

The show’s original concept was a focus on swing music, but Phil Harris and Alice became successful in their own right and so the show became their own, the Phil Harris-Alice Faye Show.

This version of the show was a comedy that featured one song from the couple each episode. As the show gained great popularity, it ran for 6 years. The last episode of the show aired in 1954. By this time, the dawn of TV shows was on the up, which was why many old time radio shows were quickly going.

Phil Harris maintained his musical career connection long after the original radio show ended. Starring in many television productions, Phil Harris also did much voice over work for Disney classic The Jungle Book and The Aristocats, as Baloo and Thomas O’Malley respectively.

The places where Phil Harris grew up and had his first big breaks were not forgotten by Phil Harris, as he donated a lot to the students of his hometown Linton, and even Palm Springs, where he grew up as a young aspiring performer. A lot of his merchandise was handed over to the Linton Public Library, and

it can still be found there. He died of a heart attack in 1995 at 91 years of age. His wife Alice lived another 3 years after his death.
